Breakfast good time for taking vitamins
"Vitamin and mineral supplements can cause nausea, heartburn and other gastric disturbances, especially when taken on an empty stomach. For best absorption and the least irritation to the stomach, take your supplements with a meal containing fat. This is particularly important for fat-soluble vitamins (A, D and E)." (

Medicare Drug Program Gets Some Help
"Medicare's slow-to-catch-on prescription drug program, available next January, is getting a push from organizations that want to help it succeed.
Former Sen. John Breaux of Louisiana announced Tuesday the creation of the Medicare Rx Education Network, composed of more than 40 groups hoping to get people to sign up for the program. They include the AARP, Blue Cross Blue Shield, the Easter Seals and American Medical Association." (reference)
Protein Could Lead to New Diabetes Drugs
"A protein that's overproduced by fat cells in obese individuals appears to promote insulin resistance -- elevating the risk for diabetes, heart disease and early death, according to researchers. Until now the particular protein -- known as retinol binding protein 4, or RBP4 -- had been known solely for its innocuous role as a "transport vehicle," involved in the delivering of vitamin A to healthy tissue. Identifying RBP4's less benign function as an instigator of insulin resistance may lead doctors towards new drug interventions that focus on limiting secretion of the protein among obese patients at risk for type 2 diabetes." Of course, it's much easier to simply avoid obesity in the first place.

Teen Inactivity Leads to Obesity for Girls
"Decreasing physical activity during adolescence seems to play a major role in weight gain among girls as they transition from children to women. Inactive girls gained an average of 10 pounds to 15 pounds more than girls who were active between the ages of 9 and 19, according to a study appearing in the July 16 issue of
The Lancet. The number of calories consumed increased marginally and did not appear to be associated with the weight gain." (

Allergies, Asthma May Protect Against Brain Cancer
"The newly published study suggests that variations in specific genes that have been linked to asthma, hay fever, and other allergic conditions may also be associated with a decreased risk for the brain tumor known as glioblastoma multiforme. Glioblastomas, or gliomas, are the most common type of brain cancers and are more common in the elderly. The tumor occurs in 13 out of 100,000 people over age 65, and the five-year survival rate in this age group is very low." (reference)

Finding may open new front in Alzheimer's fight
"Brain cells poisoned by Alzheimer's disease don't always die right away, says provocative research that suggests it may one day be possible to save those sick cells and recover some memory. 'We'd always thought the mental impairment was due to the loss of neurons,' said lead researcher Karen Ashe, a University of Minnesota neurology professor. 'What we're showing is that there are neurons which are affected but not dead.'" (reference)

Obesity tougher on men
"The study found extremely obese women displaying better endurance and respiratory capacity during exercise than similarly heavy men. The men also fared worse than women in terms of a condition called 'carbohydrate intolerance.' Unable to utilize carbs as the high-energy fuel source they are meant to be, people with this condition typically store unprocessed, excess carbohydrates as body fat." (reference)

Genes May Override Exercise in Cholesterol War
"Researchers say the findings may help explain why some sedentary people can eat a high-fat diet without suffering the artery-clogging consequences while others who exercise regularly still suffer from high cholesterol levels. Eating a healthy, low-fat diet and regular exercise can help the vast majority of people maintain healthy cholesterol levels. But researchers say their results show that some people may be born with genes that make them naturally more sensitive or resistant to dietary cholesterol, whether they're a couch potato or a marathon runner." Sytrinol which helps people maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

Watchdog group wants FDA to put health warnings on sodas
"Sodas should follow alcohol and cigarettes and bear a federally mandated warning label detailing the dangers of consuming too many, a food watchdog group said Wednesday in filing a petition with the Food and Drug Administration. The Center for Science in the Public Interest, which has fought for clear nutrition labeling on foods and published information about the poor nutritional content of fast food, says Americans, especially young ones, are getting too much refined sugar from soft drinks." (

Drinking water and diet sodas are considerably better for your health. While the CSPI brings up a valid point about the health effects of soda, is it truly necessary to put warning labels on them? Couldn't we put the same labels on candy bars?
Hormone therapy may have risks
"More than half of the older women who took combination hormone therapy for an average of almost six years suffered a recurrence of menopause symptoms, like hot flashes and night sweats, when they stopped the therapy. Not all the women had the same symptoms or results, but the women most likely to have their symptoms return had the most severe symptoms to begin with. This would make them the most likely to seek hormones for relief." (

Acupuncture May Ease Arthritis
"A new study suggests acupuncture could help cut the pain of arthritis. Researchers followed 300 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. After 8 weeks the patients treated with traditional Chinese acupuncture reported significantly less pain than those without any acupuncture." (Reference)
Exercises Could Help Prevent Hip Fractures
"A computerized study of hip bones suggests that certain exercises could limit the steep increase in hip fracture risk that occurs as people grow old, British researchers report. The exercises would be aimed at strengthening the upper portion of the femur, the leg bone that fits into the hip, said doctors at the University of Cambridge." (

Study casts new doubts on prostate cancer test
"For years, men were told that PSA scores below a particular threshold were normal, while high results could indicate cancer, says Ian Thompson, lead author of a paper in today's
Journal of the American Medical Association. His new study shows there is no safe cutoff. Instead, the risk of cancer rises steadily along with PSA levels, says Thompson, chairman of urology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio." (

FDA Orders Label Change for Impotence Drugs
"The agency is advising consumers to stop taking [Viagra, Cialis and Levitra] and call a doctor or health-care provider immediately if they experience sudden or decreased vision loss in one or both eyes, a condition known as NAION (non arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy) that occurs when blood flow is blocked to the optic nerve. Anyone taking or considering taking these erectile dysfunction drugs should also tell their health-care provider if they've ever had severe loss of vision, which might reflect a prior episode of NAION. Such patients are at an increased risk of developing NAION again, the FDA said in a statement." (

Experts remind people to wear sunglasses
"
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, UV exposure over time can cause eye disorders, even vision loss. And this damage can occur even on hazy days. They suggest when looking for sunglasses, make sure they block 99 or 100 percent of UV light. The color of the lenses doesn't matter, because the UV blocking layer is clear." (reference)

Soybean protein may help lower blood pressure
"People with prehypertension or stage 1 hypertension experienced a significant drop in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure after taking a daily 40g isolated soybean protein supplement for 12 weeks. A control group, taking a complex carbohydrate for 12 weeks, saw no such benefit."
"
High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease, and recent evidence suggests that it is increasing across the globe, with more than 1.5 billion people expected to have high blood pressure by 2025 (around one in three adults over the age 20)." (reference)

When attempting to lose weight, motivation is a key part of the process. People are often misguided and feel that a diet is the'only way' to lose weight. Instead, what is needed is a change in your lifestyle. Here are some simple suggestions for changingyour lifestyle to start losing unwanted pounds, while not starvingyourself:
- Eat something small as soon as you wake up in the morning. A low calorie granola bar or a small bowl of cereal is perfect. Having food in your stomach as soon as you wake ensures that your metabolism starts up early in the day.
- Go for a walk or run. Many people fail to see the benefits of exercising, as they are twofold - one is that it helps build muscles in your legs, which increases the amount of calories your bodyautomatically burns each day. A second benefit is that the process of walking and running actually burns a few calories, and increases your metabolism for up to 7 hours after you run.
- Eat slowly. It takes roughly 20 minutes for your stomach to 'tell' your brain that you're actually full. If you eat slowly, you'll find you get full quicker than you think - and you won't have a stomach ache after you eat.
- Jump onto the diet soda bandwagon. If you're a soda addict, then a significant way to reduce your calorie intake is to drink diet soda instead - soda companies are making their diet sodas taste morelike the regular sodas, while still having 0 calories and 0 sugar. Of course, if you don't drink soda, then it's probably better if you don't drink any at all. Another alternative is flavored water - there are many no-calorie waters out there, with a huge variety of flavors.
- Do push-ups and sit-ups, or lift weights. Again, building muscle not only automatically increases the normal amount of calories your body burns on a daily basis, it also burns calories when you do the exercises and tones your body.
- Of course, dietary supplements have been known to help with the fat burning process. You can find
VitaminDepotOnline's entire selection of dietary products.
Using these methods, I have personally lost 11 pounds over the last monthand a half. I'm not starving myself by any means, but just by spending a few minutes of my day to do these things, I've already begun to feel a lot better about my body.

German researchers reported that a combination of folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 reduced intima-media thickness of the carotid artery in men and women at risk of cerebral ischemia. Measurement of carotid artery intima-media thickness is used to determine the presence and extent of atherosclerosis. Thickening of these layers of the artery is associated with a greater extent of the disease.
