Description

Botanical: Citrus paradisi
Family: Rutaceae (rue)

Grapefruit Seed is an active botanical extract that may be one of the most powerful

supplements that effectively helps to destroy bacteria, viruses, fungal strains and many

kinds of parasites, microbes and disease-causing pathogens. Moreover, the high vitamin-C

content is a potent immune enhancer that helps to ward off colds, flu and possibly even

malignant disease; and the biotin in its high vitamin-B content helps to efficiently utilize

dietary body fats.

History:
The Grapefruit tree is believed to be descended from the pomelo (Citrus maxima), which is native to India and other parts of Asia. The pomelo was first taken to London by an Englishman, and from there it was introduced into the West Indies, where, after genetic mutation of the seed, the Grapefruit was born, becoming one of the most popular citrus fruits in the Western Hemisphere. Botanically, it was not distinguished from the pomelo until the 1830s, when it was given the name Citrus paradisi. Grapefruit was probably introduced into Florida about 1809, and did not extend west until the advent of the railroads, but the fruit is now grown in warm climates throughout the world, where it thrives as a crop in light, sandy, well-drained soil in full sun with ample moisture during the growing season. It requires a warm climate - minimum of 41 degrees Fahrenheit - with no frost, since young (only) trees are vulnerable. The mature tree is handsome, growing to forty feet in height, or even more, and bearing fruit in "grapelike" clusters, sometimes bearing a dozen or more fruits grouped closely together, and thereby giving Grapefruit its name. Grapefruit is a large, round, yellow-skinned (also pink and white-fleshed), tart-flavored member of the citrus family that can weigh anywhere from one to five pounds and closely allied to orange and lemon. There is even a green-skinned variety called the "Sweetie," which is less tart than the others. The pink and red hues contain the beneficial antioxidant, lycopene. The botanical genus, Citrus, was originally called kedromelon [?ed??µ????] in Greek, meaning “apple of cedar,” but the fruit was mistakenly identified by Greek travellers in Egypt, and the Romans changed the Greek name to citrus. The medicinal uses of citruses are complex, and commonly, the leaves, fruits and bark have been used, while in China, several different drugs were prepared from the peel and pulp, and first mentioned in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in the first century A.D. Grapefruit Seed, however, became one of the new, natural-wonder nutrients of the 1980s and 1990s, when reports streamed in saying that Grapefruit Seed was significantly effective in fighting infections. Farmers were actually the first to discover its antibacterial qualities and used Grapefruit Seed extract to inhibit the growth of mould on their equipment; later, cosmetic companies added it to their products as a preservative. When claims that Grapefruit Seed extract (which is a biologically active botanical extract derived from the seeds and pulp) could combat infections, the health supplement industry took note and quickly offered it in natural herbal supplements to meet the demand for its antibiotic and antifungal properties. A sulfur-containing terpene, para-1-menthene-8-thiol, is one of the substances which has a strong influence on the taste and odor of grapefruit, compared to other citrus fruits. Grapefruit Seed is packed with vitamin C and potassium and also contains volatile oils, acids, coumarins, bioflavonoids (quercetin, hesperidin, rutin, etc.), folate, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, calcium, fiber, beta-carotene, all of the B-vitamin group and vitamin E.

Beneficial Uses:
Grapefruit Seed is said to have remarkable therapeutic effects against hundreds of assorted bacteria, viruses and fungal strains, as well as many kinds of parasites, and has been called a broad-spectrum, anti-microbial compound. The citricidal content in Grapefruit Seed has the unique ability to safely eliminate a wide array of potentially harmful disease-causing pathogens.

As an antibacterial, Grapefruit Seed is said to destroy infection and bacteria, working like an antibiotic drug, without destroying the helpful bacteria that are normally present. The extract from seeds are said to be especially helpful in intestinal infections, inhibiting infection while correcting the balance of intestinal flora and encouraging the growth of healthy bacteria. It is also thought to ease traveler's diarrhea caused by bacteria and handle the most drug-resistant Streptococcus faecalis germs, as well as Staphyloccus aureus, E. colii, Salmonella, Klebsiella, Proteus and cholera.

Grapefruit is often called the "Fat Melting Fruit," the theory being that the fruit's low glycemic index is able to help the body's metabolism burn fat. Grapefruit Seed contains the whole spectrum of the vitamin-B group, with a particularly high content of biotin, which is responsible for the utilization of dietary body fats, facilitating the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins (and the utilization of other B-complex vitamins). Some studies have also shown that Grapefruit helps to lower cholesterol.

As an antifungal, Grapefruit Seed is said to be very effective in controlling vaginal yeast infections caused by Candida, as well as other fungal infections including herpes. It is most heavily used as a treatment for Candida albicans overgrowth. Candida is a yeast naturally present in the human body, but causes complications when it grows out of control. Grapefruit Seed also helps to treat a poorly understood intestinal condition called Candida Overgrowth Syndrome (COS).

There is evidence that citrus Grapefruit Seed contains antioxidant properties, and it is thought to enhance the immune system's defenses against serious malignant disease. Vitamin C must be supplied by the diet, and because Grapefruit Seed contains a high level of this nutrient, the supplement has been used to combat colds and flu and build up immunity to other serious disease. It is also thought to contain constituents that assist with lymphatic drainage and elimination of toxins, while simultaneously nourishing the skin with vitamin C.

Many experts on Grapefruit chemistry believe that a furocoumarin in Grapefruit is responsible for its effect on the enzyme (CYP 3A4) that metabolizes many medications and may increase the levels of medications in the body (see Contraindications below for guidance).

Grapefruit Seed extract has been used as a bactericide and fungicide in rinsing produce that will, quite simply, kill what is contaminating or decaying food. It has also been used in gargles to ease sore throat pain and kill bacteria in the throat.

Recommended Dosage:
Take one (1) capsule, one (1) time each day with water at an early to midday mealtime.

Contraindications:
Those who are allergic to citrus fruits may have reactions to Grapefruit Seed. Certain medications may be activated (or deactivated) with the use of Grapefruit (or any citrus), and if in doubt, you should ask your health care provider. Grapefruit (unlike other citrus) contains furocoumarins, a substance that seems to affect the way your body absorbs certain medications, and this may enhance or possibly even counter the efficacy of prescription medicines (including cyclosporine, blood pressure, some antihistimines, erectile dysfunction medication, heart medications), so if you are taking any medications, check with your physician before taking this product.
