Methylcobalamin is the form of vitamin B12 active in the centralnervous system. It is an active coenzyme of the vitamin B12 analogs, that are essential for cell growth and replication.230The liver may not convert cyanocobalamin, the common supplemental formof vitamin B12, into adequate amounts of methylcobalamin the body mayneed for proper neuronal functioning.231*Methylcobalamin may exert its neuroprotective effects through enhancedmethylation, acceleration of nerve cell growth or its ability topromote healthy homocysteine levels.230*For methylcobalamin to be available to the brain, it should be allowedto dissolve under the tongue in order to bypass the liver during firstpass through the blood stream.*
