Methylcobalamin is the form of vitamin B12 active in the central nervoussystem. It is an active coenzyme of the vitamin B12 analogs, that is essentialfor cell growth and replication.135 Theliver may not convert cyanocobalamin, the common supplemental form of vitaminB12, into adequate amounts of methylcobalamin the body may need for properneuronal functioning.136* Methylcobalaminmay exert its neuroprotective effects through enhanced methylation, accelerationof nerve cell growth, or its ability to promote healthy homocysteine levels.135*For methylcobalamin to be available to the brain, it should be allowedto dissolve under the tongue in order to bypass the liver during firstpass through the blood stream.*
