Policosanol is a natural supplement derived from sugar cane. It is a mixtureof eight higher primary aliphatic alcohols isolated and purified from sugarcane wax. Cheap versions of policisanol that contain a high amount of octacosanolhave flooded the American marketplace. If one expects to derive the benefitsshown in the published studies, the other alcohols that make up the pharmaceutical-approvedpolicosanol product should be present.
Policosanol promotes healthy platelet function and helps to maintain cholesterollevels that are already within the normal range.35-46* Animal and humanstudies have also shown that policosanol is an antioxidant.47-51 When usedin long-term clinical trials, policosanol was well tolerated and safe.47,52-54
